SC Mission Day - 1

By Kate Crosby, SCMA Communications Director

Day 1 of South Carolina Mission was a true success! Multiple physicians, residents, and students volunteered to help see hundreds of patients on day one. From pap smears, to diagnosing lesions and tumors, to a cardiologist on site to trouble shoot a pacemaker, the day was truly eventful! But, let's have the pictures tell the story.

Dr. Bruce Snyder, President of the South Carolina Medical Association (left) pictured with Dr. Leon Bullard, SCMA Board Member and SC Mission Medical Director. Dr. Snyder drove down from Greenville to greet physicians and help where ever he was needed (including passing out lunch to our physicians, helping with a referral, doing media interviews, and even help with physician-patient flow). Thanks for coming Dr. Snyder!

Several SCMA staff members were available for Physician Relations, which included checking physicians in, assigning them to exam rooms, and answering all physician-related questions. Dr. Leon Bullard stops from his busy duties as the event Medical Director to pose for a picture with Barbara Willm, Vice President of Community Relations, who also served as the event's chairperson.

Dr. Bullard completed several media interviews throughout the day. Here, he tells reporters about one of the event's new features this year: pap smears. As an ob/gyn, pap smears were advocated for by Dr. Bullard which was a much valued service today. 4th Year Medical Student poses with him. Many medical students were available today to shadow and learn from the physician volunteers.

An aerial view of the medical services offered in the Cantey Building at the SC Fairgrounds. The medical set-up consisted of triage, dozens of exam rooms, a cardio wing, ob/gyn wing, and referrals to x-ray where a radiologist was available.

Here, a resident physician at Palmetto Health, Dr. Cene, discusses a patient's chart with two medical students.

Dr. Tripp Jennings, a fourth time volunteer, talks about patient flow with a medical team leader. Together with Palmetto Health residents, Dr. Jennings oversaw a wing of students this morning, giving them several opportunities to have hands-on learning experiences with patients.

While greeting physicians, Dr. Snyder got pulled in for a consult! Even the services of a vascular surgeon were needed today! This patient was incredibly grateful to Dr. Snyder.

That's a wrap! Thank you to all of our volunteers, physicians, residents, and students who made today such a success!
