Change the Way People Respond to You

By Deb Sofield, Public Speaking Coach

Over the next few weeks, join Deb Sofield as she goes through her series 15 Rules for the Physician Leader, where she outlines how a physician leader can be successful when speaking, no matter where they are...

Rule #3. This rule can change the way people respond to you.

Be Glad To Be There – the first step to warming up an audience for success is to be glad to be there.

How many speakers have you heard that actually sound glad to be addressing the audience before them? You would be surprised how many times the speaker forgets or just bypasses this wonderful opportunity?

You maybe asking, why is that important to say a few simple words? Here is why; a glad to be there line can erase a host of problems. If an audience doesn’t like you – for whatever reason – a genuine glad to be here line will help break down barriers, help you neutralize an audience and may be the one thing that allows you a second chance.

The key is this: you must have a pleasant look and genuine desire to be present in the moment for this to work.

If you don’t at least act like you're glad to be there the audience will know… Be gracious and be kind – you never know when your words will help someone save money, make money, or change their actions and attitudes.

A Glad To Be Here Line is your hook to keep the audience engaged while you begin your presentation...don’t by-pass this opportunity.

Deb's Tip of the Month:
Your gestures matter and a good strong gesture has three parts: the approach, the stroke, and the return. Remember your power comes from the shoulder and not your elbow. A large idea should be LARGE – meaning you must put your arms out wide (elbows away from your body)... you might feel a little odd... but it looks great and powerful. It shows you are sure of yourself. So don’t hold your arms in – be big, be bold, be seen.
